XIII Death Illustrative Art Print
Sapphic Love Tarot Collection
Transformation. Loss. Remembrance. Rebirth.
Death is associated with Scorpio, the zodiac sign of transformation, emotional depth and the cycles of destruction and renewal.
Despite its name, the Death card rarely represents literal death in traditional tarot. Instead, it symbolizes profound change, endings, release and the inevitable transformation that follows when something in our lives can no longer remain the same.
At its core, Death represents the moment when life divides into a before and an after. The ending of a relationship, the loss of someone we love, the collapse of something familiar or a change that alters who we are. Some transformations are chosen. Others arrive without warning, leaving us to navigate a world that no longer feels quite the same.
Its shadow side lives in resistance, fear, grief and the struggle to release what once was. We may cling to memories, familiar identities or the hope that things could somehow return to the way they were. But transformation doesn't always mean letting go of love or forgetting what we've lost. Sometimes it means learning how to carry those things differently.
Death reminds us that change is inevitable, but so is our capacity to evolve. We don't always emerge from transformation as the people we were before, and perhaps we're not meant to.
Part of Sapphic Love, an original queer tarot-inspired art collection celebrating identity, connection, transformation and the beautifully complicated nature of being human.
The Artwork
For this illustration, I wanted to move away from the traditional depiction of Death as a skeleton or Grim Reaper. Instead, I chose to portray a hooded feminine figure who has experienced profound loss and carries the weight of that transformation.
Her eyes remain hidden beneath a deep crimson hood, while her face turns upward. There is vulnerability in her expression, but also resilience. She isn't celebrating an ending, nor is she defeated by it. She exists somewhere between grief and acceptance, learning to navigate what comes next.
An owl rests upon her arm, its piercing red eyes looking directly outward. Traditionally associated with wisdom, intuition and the unseen, the owl represents vigilance, protection and the quiet awareness that sometimes accompanies life's most difficult transitions.
Behind her, a raven perches upon the branches of a barren tree, silhouetted against a blood-red moon. Often associated with mystery, remembrance and the passage between endings and beginnings, the raven serves as a symbol of what remains connected to us, even through change.
The blood moon dominates the background, representing transformation, emotional intensity and the cycles of endings and renewal. The barren tree reflects what has been stripped away, while its reaching branches suggest that even in stillness, something continues.
A traditional rose tattoo adorns the figure's arm, symbolizing love, beauty, memory and the delicate relationship between life and loss. The star above it offers a quiet reminder of guidance and hope, even when the path forward is uncertain.
Rendered in bold black linework, deep crimson and stark white, the illustration draws inspiration from traditional tattoo art, linocut printmaking and gothic symbolism.
